Tiny scraps

A patched piece of 15 tiny squares of fabric. Each is a section from a purple checked shirt, so the pieces form an irregular wobbly grid. The patch would be a square but the top right scrap is missing. Strands of thread stick out of the patch.

Would you say this was fixed?

A tiny little scrap

A 6 inch square of white linen with short frayed edges all round. Very pale blue dye has washed over most of the fabric, leaving just the top and right edges uncoloured. A tiny pink triangular scrap of fabric is stitched at the bottom centre. Deep pink straight stitches are worked around this scrap, creating concentric triangles, spreading out from the scrap, the stitches shrinking as they get further out, eventually becoming tiny dots.

An open book with a piece of stitched blue fabric covering the bottom half of page 37. The top half of the page has a stitch diagram and text describing how to work the feathered chain stitch. On the fabric are small stitches in graduated rainbow colours, zigzagging up the left side. A loose strand coils next to the sewing.

The structure of the patch

A roughly square textile piece backlit using a flat white light. The textile is mostly constructed from strips of formal office shirts in small blue or pink grids, pink and blue stripes, with some solid blue scraps. The backlighting shows dark strips where the scraps are layered and seamed together.

Patchwork block in tracing paper

Folded and unfolded

A sheet of tracing paper backlit with an even white light. Thin dark lines criss-cross the paper where it’s been folded and flattened. At some junctions there are tiny bright spots where the paper has torn.

Altered focus

A piece of patchwork fabric made from irregularly sized scraps of cotton office shirts, in shades of pink and blue. A layer of frosted paper with crisp creases is stitched on top of the patchwork, partially blurring some of the fabric.

Making progress
