Red flags at the table
Before Ordering / Just Sitting Down
They sprawl before the menu arrives—
already home.
Leg shaking like it’s late for something important.
Phone out, of course.
An air of entitlement,
as if the meal owes them an apology.
Ordering Food
They decide what everyone else should eat.
Too healthy. Too much. Too little.
They order generously,
confident the leftovers will sort themselves out.
They complain about prices,
about options,
about the burden of choice itself.
Food Arrives
Hands cross borders.
Plates are no longer personal property.
Food is pushed where it did not ask to go.
No thank you—
only the first review, delivered immediately.
While Eating
Mouth open.
Sound first, manners later.
Words seasoned with food.
Bodily noises, proudly unsupervised.
Topics appear uninvited,
doing their best to ruin everyone’s appetite.
Complaints repeat,
as if volume might improve the flavour.
Mid-Meal Behaviour
Scrolling.
Texting.
A video murmuring softly, but insistently.
Half-listening as a lifestyle choice.
Eyes down,
attention elsewhere.
Occasional commentary on how others eat—
as if this were a performance review.
Finishing Up
Plates remain heavy, unfinished.
Waste is noted only in theory.
They lean back.
They wait.
Someone else will handle it.
After the Meal
They leave.
No acknowledgement.
No closing gesture.
Responsibility, once again,
left on the table.
