    Group Description

    Art & Labour examines the material conditions of artistic work. Topics may include income, class, precarity, self-employment, unpaid and invisible labour, applications and funding, employment conditions, intellectual property, access, discrimination and collective organisation, alongside broader questions about value, autonomy, the commodity and the relationship between artistic practice and work. Central questions concern how artistic practice is financed, who bears its costs and who can afford to be an artist; how institutions organise and extract value from artists’ labour; and the mismatch between the conditions of artistic work and the systems artists depend on. The group combines collective enquiry with peer mentoring and practical support. It is a space to compare experiences, identify recurring structural problems, share resources, and explore collective responses or less individualised ways of working. Members are invited to propose questions, initiate discussions, and form working groups around matters they want to investigate. The direction of the group will be shaped by its members.

    Who Is This Group For?

    Art & Labour is for visual artists who want to understand and discuss the material conditions of artistic work, explore what we can do collectively, and support each other through peer mentoring. It is open to artists at different stages of practice and in different economic and working circumstances. This may include artists dealing with low or irregular income, housing or studio insecurity, disability or discrimination, benefits, the costs of sustaining a practice, burnout, the demands of self-promotion and social media, or questions about the ownership and use of their work, ideas and labour.

    Responsibilities Of Membership

    Members are expected to:

    1. contribute to the group’s purpose according to their interests and capacity, recognising that its activity is collectively produced;
    2. treat each other with kindness and respect;
    3. listen when others are speaking and avoid interrupting;
    4. engage constructively with views they may not share;
    5. respect creative ownership, privacy and confidentiality;
    6. obtain explicit consent before recording or photographing meetings, taking or circulating screenshots, or sharing another member’s words, work, experiences or personal information; share responsibility for activities they initiate;
    7. use the group only for activity relevant to its stated purpose;
    8. seek collective agreement before making statements, undertaking projects, entering collaborations or taking other action in the name of Art & Labour.


     

    Unacceptable behaviour

    1. Harassment, bullying, discrimination and harmful behaviour are not acceptable. This includes: comments or behaviour that marginalise others or reinforce discrimination or structures of domination relating to gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, race, ethnicity, nationality, migration status, age, religion, class or technical skill;
    2. intimidation, threats, insults, personal attacks, abuse or deliberately hostile behaviour; unwelcome sexual attention;
    3. content or behaviour that promotes, glorifies or threatens violence.

    Who Is This Group For?

    This group is open to painters working in any style, at any stage of their career, and based anywhere in the world. It's a place to share works in progress, finished pieces, questions, and reflections, while engaging respectfully with the work of others.

    Guidelines for Sharing Work

    • This is a medium-specific group. Please share painting-related work only.
    • When posting work, let others know what kind of feedback would be most useful to you. Specific questions often lead to more meaningful responses.

    Uploading Images

    • Wherever possible, share a direct link to the image you'd like feedback on.
    • If uploading an image file, please ensure it is no larger than 2MB and no more than 1600 pixels on its longest side.

    Deletion of Posts and Images

    To help maintain the performance and sustainability of the site, discussion threads and uploaded images will be automatically deleted after one month.

    Giving Feedback

    • Be prepared to give feedback as well as receive it.
    • Be generous, respectful, and considerate in your comments.
    • Remember that communication online can easily be misinterpreted. Take extra care with your tone and wording.
    • Focus on helping others reflect on and develop their work rather than judging it.
    • Ask open, neutral questions where possible. For example: "What informed your decision around colour?" rather than: "Why are your colours so dark?"Frame feedback as observations, questions, and suggestions rather than statements of fact.

    Receiving Feedback

    • Assume feedback is offered in good faith and with positive intentions.
    • Engage with feedback openly, while remembering that you are free to decide what is useful for your practice.
    • If something is unclear, ask for clarification rather than making assumptions about a commenter's intent.

We share work, discuss process, and engage openly with questions about AI's impact on artistic practice—including ethical considerations, evolving labour economics, and what it means to make art with these tools. Whether you're curious, experimental, or deeply critical, this is a space to show what you're making and learn from others doing the same. Please note that image sharing is limited to one piece per artist per month.

    Who this group is for

    Visual artists at any experience level—beginners to established practitioners—who want to share AI-generated or AI-hybrid work and discuss it thoughtfully. We welcome narrative, conceptual, abstract, experimental, and hybrid approaches.

    How it works

    • Monthly thread: Share finished pieces or work in progress
    • Transparency required: Include an artist statement, name the AI tool(s) you used (Midjourney, DALL-E, Stable Diffusion, etc.), and share your prompt or describe your process
    • Community feedback: Responses are constructive and respectful; all perspectives on AI practice are welcome
    • What we don't allow: Spam, hateful or discriminatory content, sexualised content, copyright-infringing material, or commercial work

    Group description

    To provide a space for sharing information, resources and good practice relating to sustainable, environmentally-conscious art making. This could include exploring environmentally sustainable alternatives to common art materials, sharing ideas for projects which focus attention on climate and the eco-crisis, or working together on projects or proposals which center sustainable or ecological themes.

    Who is this group for?

    Artists who are engaged in environmentally conscious art making, or who wish to explore sustainability with the support of a like-minded peer network.

    Code of conduct

    • Engaging with users No matter where you engage on the network with your peers, we expect all users to treat one another with kindness and respect. We’re all here to learn, and sometimes people make mistakes. If you see something that you think is harmful, please report it so we can act. Each profile has a Report button at the end, or you can email us at artquest@arts.ac.uk.
    • Unacceptable behaviour We do not allow harassment nor any content that promotes, encourages, glorifies, or threatens acts of violence. We also do not allow causing or contributing to an atmosphere that excludes or marginalises other members.
    • Sensitive content and imagery We do not allow any content that promotes, encourages, provides instruction for, or glorifies suicidal or self-injurious behaviours. We also do not allow content that promotes, encourages, provides instruction for, or glorifies harm or cruelty.
    • Harmful political content We do not allow political content that encourages harm to others or that supports, celebrates, or furthers the cause of violent actors and hate organisations. We may, in some places, allow pointed or harsh criticism of political figures, their policies, and governments (including satirical statements) as long as they do not otherwise violate this Code of Conduct.
    • Misleading information We do not allow any content that promotes false, harmful, or misleading information that carries the risk of harm to a person or group of people. We also do not allow content that promotes false or misleading information for the purpose of promoting the interests of a political party, government, or ideology.
    • Fake profiles We do not allow any profiles that pretend to be someone they’re not. The network works best when populated by individual professional visual artists only, and we will work to make sure no other people become members. If you find a profile that seems not to be an artist, please use the Report button and our team will investigate.
    • Usernames and profiles While we encourage users to express themselves in their profiles, all user profiles in their entirety are subject to the Code of Conduct.
    • Reporting Every person contributes to building a collaborative, respectful community. If you find unacceptable behaviour you can Report the profile or content to artquest@arts.ac.uk. Our team reviews reports regularly, and users who don’t follow the Code of Conduct in good faith may face account suspension or blocking.
    • All actions will be taken on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of our team. If you’re not satisfied with one of our decisions, you are welcome to appeal it by contacting us directly. We review each report individually and will respond as quickly as we can.
