Waving palm

When flattening the clay, I pressed my palm into the surface with my body weight, and the clay yielded, retaining the soft imprint of my hand. After turning it over and drawing lines with my fingers on the uneven surface, the lines emerged as gentle waves, shaped by the clay’s own undulations rather than by my original intention. During making, cracks appeared along the edges, introducing an unforeseen transformation generated by the material itself.

Coil Intervention

I formed coils of clay by hand and pressed their upper edges onto the window, letting the glass hold them in place. Almost immediately, the clay began to breathe its moisture onto the surface, a faint bloom spreading across the glass. Within moments, droplets gathered and traced slow paths downward. The clay softened in response, loosening its grip, hovering on the verge of slipping free from the window.

Porcelain Slip flowing on paper

Block and Flakes

This work explores how semi-dry porcelain resists being shaped. I cut and shaved the clay without deciding the final form in advance. The clay did not cut cleanly and broke into rough flakes, leaving irregular marks on the surface. The final form emerged through a co-creation between my actions and the clay’s changing condition over time.

10,000 marks

I shaved a block of almost-hardened porcelain for over one hour using small strokes, at about two strokes per second. Little by little, the block became smaller.

Clay Flakes in Water

Seabed (After 24 hours)

I photographed the clay flakes scattered into water and settled on the bottom after 24 hours. As the clay dissolved almost instantly, the water became cloudy; once the clay settled and all sediment came to rest, a mysterious, seabed-like surface emerged.

A Hole in Clay

I rolled a small lump of clay that fit in my palm and flattened it slightly, like a rice cake. I pressed the centre with my thumb and index finger, and a hollow began to appear. As I kept pressing, a hole opened. I widened the hole until my thumb could fit inside. The form gradually developed into a ring-like shape.

Cone, Reassembled

Stratified Coil Mountain

I built up the form through layered coils, creating a mountain-like structure reminiscent of the stratified landscape of Cappadocia.

Twist and Layer

I twisted the coil thinly and pressed it down with enough force to leave slight finger marks, layering them on top of each other. The coil broke in places or cracked as it dried. When twisting the coil thinly, it also became slightly warped.

Soft Geometry

I cut a slab of clay into a rectangle and lifted and pressed the soft material, shaping it into a polyhedral form.

Twisted Arch

I grasped a mass of clay and twisted it into a large coil. The coil was then lifted and formed into an arch, balancing the form to prevent collapse.

Reconstituted Cubes

I cut a clay mass, composed of reconstituted fragments from previous use, with a wire. I then struck each portion with a trowel to form a cube. Despite repeating the same operation, each cube took on a slightly different form.

Fragile Layer

I sliced a thin section from a clay mass with a wire. Due to its softness and reduced thickness, it deformed under its own weight. The edge appeared finely serrated.

Absorption and Fracture

An aggregate of clay masses with varying degrees of hardness was stretched using a rolling pin, together with small dried clay fragments. Because the moisture content differed among the clay portions, cracks developed on the surface during the stretching process. The dried fragments gradually absorbed moisture from the surrounding clay, and their color slowly changed over time.

Clay Ring on a Cherry Tree

Frozen Porcelain Slip

I dissolved porcelain fragments in water and strained the mixture through a sieve to make a smooth slip. I poured the slip into a flat container and froze it for 12 hours. As the water in the slip froze, a crystalline pattern appeared on the surface.

Clay Bird

In the park I often visit, I noticed the sound of birds echoing through the space. When I looked up, I could only see branches and leaves. The bird must have been somewhere in the trees, but it was difficult to find. It might have been a parakeet, as the call was loud and distinct. That day, I tried several clay experiments in the park, but the results were not very successful. As I was leaving, I noticed a stone fountain that is usually ignored in everyday life. I placed a clay bird on its edge.

Washed Clay Ring

The clay ring placed on the tree trunk three days ago detached due to shrinkage during drying, leaving only some fragments in place when it was exposed to rain. The rain partially dissolved the clay, leaving traces that flowed along the tree’s surface in the direction of gravity.
