(In Baskerville)

Brown ink drawing on off white paper of the word ‘Messy’ in large serif lettering, with ‘in Baskerville’ written below in smaller text. The letters overlap with loose circular scribbles and sketchy marks, and a small handwritten ‘nom nom nom’ appears near the centre. To the right, a simple line drawing shows a human figure leaning forward as if pulling or stretching the final letters. Two arrow shapes point upward in the top right corner. The overall style is rough, hand drawn, and playful.

(In Magneto)

Brown ink drawing on pale blue lined paper of the phrase ‘Do it backwards’, with the words stretched diagonally across the page and the letterforms drawn in reverse, so they appear mirrored and hard to read. Thick, blocky lettering is surrounded by rough brushy shading and loose scribbles. Beneath the phrase, smaller handwritten text reads ‘(IN MAGNETO) PBB.’ Diagonal sets of short parallel line marks appear in the top left and bottom right corners. The overall feel is experimental, messy, and playful.

(My brain)

Brown ink drawing on white paper showing a loosely sketched human brain, built from dense, overlapping scribbled lines. Above the brain, handwritten text reads ‘Fix something with your art’, underlined. Beneath this, further handwritten lines say: ‘Ink absorbs. Paper holds. Lines organise what my head cannot. The noise rearranges itself into scribbles.’ At the bottom of the page, more text reads: ‘Maybe fixing can mean functioning. It’s a symbiotic relationship.’ The overall style is rough and expressive.

(My flag)

Brown ink drawing on lined notebook paper showing a hand drawn flag hanging from a tall pole. The flag droops and ripples, with rough, sketchy outlines and dense scribbled shading. In the centre of the flag, the letters ‘PBB’ are written in blocky hand lettering. The base of the pole is surrounded by messy grass and ground marks. Small loose scribbles float in the sky area above. The drawing appears on the left page of an open sketchbook, while the right page is blank except for a turquoise ribbon bookmark crossing diagonally. The overall feel is quiet, informal, and provisional.

It’s a secret no-one knows…

Brown ink drawing on off white paper showing three plant forms layered together: a rose in the centre with tightly spiralled petals, a pansy flower above with broad rounded petals, and a small seed form to the left. The plants overlap and are drawn with dense cross hatched shading and loose, sketchy lines. Energetic looping scribbles fill the background around the forms. Curved handwritten text along the bottom and right edge reads ‘Plant a seed plant a flower plant a rose’. The overall style is raw, layered, and expressive, suggesting growth and becoming.

Who gets to be an artist? I’m not sure…

Brown ink drawing on off white paper showing a well worn artist’s beret resting on a textured surface. The hat is speckled with marks and stains and drawn with dense cross hatching and loose, sketchy lines. A pencil lies to the left of the hat and a small eraser sits to the right, surrounded by scattered marks suggesting a messy working surface. Above the drawing, handwritten text reads: ‘Who gets to be an artist? I’m not sure. But, a jaunty hat might help?’ The overall tone is playful, reflective, and informal.

Thesis

Brown ink drawing on pale blue lined paper showing a close view of a hand turning the page of a thick book labelled ‘PhD Thesis’. A hand grips the corner of a page mid turn, with dense cross hatching describing the fingers and palm. On the open page, handwritten text reads ‘PhD Thesis’ with short horizontal lines beneath, and the initials ‘PBB’. Smaller handwritten notes on the page edges include ‘p37’.
