Tracking changes in artists income levels and types between 2022 and 2024
The Applied: Partnership has been collecting data to generate insights into how artists live and work since 2017. We regularly analyse our data to monitor trends and identify challenges in artists’ working lives. This article explores changes in how, and how much, artists have earned between 2022 and 2024.
Key findings from this report include:
- 20% fewer artists earned money regularly from their practice
- 35% of artists earned money regularly from outside of the arts, with only 30% earning from their arts practice.
- Casual and sporadic employment for artists has increased by 8% in 2 years, making this the second most common form of artists’s income.
- More artists rely on income from their friends and family – up by 20% in 2 years – risking a less equal sector, where only those from relatively more privileged backgrounds can afford to be an artist.
