Art Worlds articles share practical advice on the realities of operating in the art world.
We’re inviting proposals for articles that offer insights on being an artist from diverse lived experiences. A central focus is how to develop and maintain a sustainable career.

We want to hear:
- Your experiences on the business of being an artist
- The advice you would pass on the next generation of artists
- From artists that identify as being marginalised in the arts
- How you have overcome the practical and philosophical challenges you face in sustaining your career
- Everyday ways in which you manage to keep making work
- About your lived experience of balancing your artistic practice, parenthood and/or any care giving responsibilities
- How you navigate the art world without having attended higher education
- Your views on developing a sustainable practice in response to the climate emergency
In return, we offer up to £250 per article, display up to 4 images/audio/film of your work, and promote your current projects on our Twitter network and email newsletter. To apply, you must be a practising visual artist anywhere in the world and a member of Exchange.
Articles can take the form of a 500 word text, video or audio piece. We publish a new article once every 2 months. Unfortunately, we can’t accept every pitch we receive. We intend to let applicants know the outcome of their proposal within 1 month.
We encourage applications from individuals who identify as part of underrepresented or marginalised groups and artists with lived experience of inequality, disadvantage and/or discrimination.
Our current open call: Measure of Success
Success is a difficult thing to measure, particularly in relation to an artist’s career where there exist such a diverse range of practices. A measure of success for one type of artistic approach might be completely inapplicable to another.
For our current Art Worlds call for proposals we would like to commission 2 artists to each write an article on how they measure success in relation to their artistic practice. These articles will elaborate on our research into artists life’s. The 2 artists we commission will represent differing approaches to how artists measure success. The articles will show and contrast different lived experiences and working practices. For example:
- Artists working in cities and artists working in rural areas
- Artists early in their career and mid or later in career artists
- Artists whose markers of success has altered as a result of life experiences and the wider creative environment shifting.
We are inviting people to pitch a proposal to write an article or create a video or audio piece that asks how you determine if your career is successful and the parameters your set to gauge the success. Your proposal may cover the following:
- How your artistic work has influenced what you define as constituting success.
- How the location you live or have lived has influenced your perception of success
- How your lived experience has influenced what you define as constituting success.
- How you see success at this stage in your career compared to earlier stages
- What you hope to achieve in your career (goals), what does a successful career look like?
- What’s lasting legacy or your artistic practice?
Deadline 10 November 2025
