Having trouble? Take a look on this page for frequently asked questions
Read the frequently asked questions below before you get in touch – it’s quicker! We’re a very small team and work part-time, so it’s quicker to check here than emailing us.
We’re on a rota to check in on emails each day, but we can’t guarantee we can get back to you before the daily deadline. We’re four part-time workers running this project for you, for fun, and cannot provide 24 hour cover. These FAQs cover all the routine queries we get, and you can solve most issues yourself.

What is Safe Mode?
We want 30/30 to be open to any artist, no matter the barriers they experience or their responsibilities outside their practice.
If you know already that you can’t take part every day, check the Safe Mode box when you register for 30/30 and never get kicked out – useful for artists with caring responsibilities, those (like us) with other jobs, or artists who may be unable to take part every day because of their health or religious observance.
Anyone can sign up in Safe Mode but use it with caution – remember it’s meant to be a challenge. The point isn’t to complete 30 days, but to challenge yourself to make work every day.
Something else?
If you need to email us, just reply to any daily prompt email. If you’re not getting these emails, our email address is below. Please don’t contact us or send queries on our Instagram account – we don’t monitor it much and probably won’t see it! Email is the best way to get in touch if you need to.
If you’re not getting emails or the challenge hasn’t begun, and your question isn’t answered here, email us.
Popular questions (click to open)
I did not upload something in time / tried to upload after 23:30 (11.30pm UK time) / had technical problems / couldn’t upload in time.
- You’ve missed the daily deadline and cannot upload today.
- We can’t upload any work for missed days.
- If you had the form open on your browser, the page will have automatically reloaded, and the form will no longer be available.
- There’s nothing we can do about it – it is not technically possible for us to:
- upload work on your behalf,
- upload work after the daily deadline, or
- edit your work after it has been uploaded.
Remember that 30/30 is a challenge, and shows how difficult it is to continue making work every day. The point is to try, not to be perfect!
I didn’t get the email prompt today.
There may be several reasons that you’re not getting emails from noreply@artquest.org.uk with the daily prompts:
- check your spam or junk folder, and add our email address to your address book.
- if you’re on Gmail, check your Promotions folder.
- you might have missed a day and already be out of the challenge – check if you have an email telling you you’re out.
- you might not be registered for 30/30. Take a look at the Day page for today, if you are registered you’ll see either an upload form or a message thanking you for your upload.
It takes up to 45 minutes for the server to process and send all the daily prompts so as not to overload the site. Not everyone gets their email at the same time. Not everyone gets it at 5am.
You don’t need to wait for the email to upload an art work – just visit the 30/30 project page, select today’s day on the menu, and see the prompt and/or upload your work.
Get in touch with us and we can check your status.
Where is the daily prompt?
There are 2 places you can find the daily prompt:
- at the top of every Day page, published at 2.30am.
- by email every day to the address you registered with, sent at 5am.
You don’t need to wait for the email to see the prompt or upload an art work – just visit the 30/30 project page, select today’s day on the menu, and see the prompt and/or upload your work.
I’m trying to upload a file that’s under 1.5MB, but it still won’t upload, what should I do?
We’re aware of an bug in WordPress that means files under our limit of 1.5MB sometimes can’t be uploaded. This is an error with the WordPress content management system and is outside of our control. We have raised it with the WordPress technical team, who have been working on a fix for some time. We don’t know when it might be fixed.
Try editing your file to make it smaller, or uploading a smaller file – and remember that an image only needs to be 72DPI for online viewing.
I’ve found some art that looks like it’s made by AI – should I report it?
Any kind of art that stays within our acceptable content is permitted, no matter how it’s created.
My YouTube / Vimeo / SoundCloud link doesn’t show up properly.
Make sure the video / audio is set to:
- visibility “Public”
- licence option “Allow embedding” (YouTube)
If it still doesn’t work, contact Artquest with the link to your public video / audio.
How big an image can I upload?
The maximum size for images is 1920px x 1920px, and no more than 1.5MB. You can resize your image on Preview (Mac) or various options on PC.
For animated GIFs, the maximum width is 980px, and no more than 1.5MB.
My image rotated on its own after I uploaded it
Data from some mobile phone cameras is overwritten by WordPress during upload. The bug is well known to WordPress and outside of our control. It affects only a small proportion of users.
Please take photos in the correct orientation to be sure this doesn’t happen again. If your image is meant to be seen in portrait orientation, take the photo in portrait orientation, for example.
Can my work be changed / edited / resized / rotated after I have submitted it?
All work submitted is final and cannot be changed once uploaded. We can’t edit or change someone’s work once it’s online.
If you made your work Private and want it to be Public (or the other way around) get in touch, tell us what day you want to change your post and email us to change it for you.
I’ve just found out about 30/30, can I join late?
Sorry, no! The project is only open to people who registered by 31 January 2025. The project is a challenge for making new work over 30 days, so no-one can join late. Join Artquest Exchange for free or follow us on Instagram to find out when future editions are taking place.
I’m out because of circumstances beyond my control, can I be let back in?
Sorry, no! The project is meant to be a challenge: about a third of people don’t finish it each year.
Making a new artwork every day for 30 days is quite an undertaking – so no matter how far you got through, congratulations!
I forgot / can’t find my password!
Visit the password reset page to set yourself a new password. We can’t set a password for you, due to privacy.
Submitting work
How do I upload my work?
Each day at 5.00am UK time we send you an email with an optional prompt and a link to upload your work. Emails might take a while to arrive depending on how must our server is, so be patient! If you’re not getting emails, see the frequently asked question about email.
You can upload an image or animated GIF, or submit a link to YouTube, Vimeo, SoundCloud or MixCloud if you want to submit video or audio. There’s also a text box (max 500 words) if you want to submit written / text work.
What time should I submit work?
All participants need to submit new artwork every day before 11.30pm UK time (by 23:30) every day. So, the first deadline is 23:30pm on 1 February 2025.
You can’t upload work between 23:30 (11.30pm, UK time) and 02:30 (2.30am, UK time) while our server processes submissions. If you try to upload during this time, you will see a message asking you to come back later.
Daily prompt emails are sent around 5.00am, UK time, but it can take some time for the server to process – up to an hour. You can see the daily prompt on the page for today if you’re an early riser! Not getting emails? See the frequently asked question about email.
I missed a day – can I upload something for the day I missed?
Nope. The point of the challenge is to upload a new artwork every day, and we can’t let people back in or update their page if a deadline is missed.
Am I signing away my copyright if I upload work to Artquest?
No. Your work always remains your property and we will never reuse your work.
You grant Artquest a license to display your work for the purposes of the project only. This means we can put your work on our website. We cannot and will not reuse your work without your express permission – in past years we contacted some participants to license their work for promotional purposes, and paid them for this.
We can’t control the whole internet, however, so it you really don’t want someone to reuse your work without your permission, don’t upload it or set it to private. Private work is invisible to everyone, except our website administrators.
If you made your work Private and want it to be Public (or the other way around) get in touch, tell us the day your post is on, and we can change it for you.
I don’t want anyone to see my work today – can I hide it?
Yes – click the box to make your work private on the upload form.
If you made your work Private and want it to be Public (or the other way around) get in touch, tell us the day your post is on, and we can change it for you.
Showing and highlighting your work
Where will my work be shown?
All work submitted is showcased on the 30/30 section of the Artquest website, and on your public Artquest Exchange profile, unless you set the work as private when you upload.
If you made your work Private and want it to be Public (or the other way around) get in touch, tell us the day your post is on, and we can change it for you.
Every day a random number generator, fondly known as the Artquest Robot, picks 5 submissions from the previous day to be shared on our Instagram account. We have no control over what gets selected, but no participant can be selected more than once.
If you’ve updated your Artquest Exchange profile with your Instagram link, we will @ you in the post. You can see all these highlights if you follow #30-30.
How do you pick work to be showcased?
We use a random number generator to pick member ID numbers on Artquest Exchange.
Evaluation suggests that some artists really wanted to be picked, some really didn’t, some really thought they should have been picked, and some thought others really shouldn’t have. So, we decided to leave the decision to our robot overlords instead.
How long will my work be online on the website?
Work will remain on the Artquest website for about a month after the project ends and we’ll let everyone know before we remove anything.
All those uploads take up a lot of space on our server, which costs us a lot of money each day and burns through more carbon that we need to (although our servers are low carbon certified).
We think this money is better used to pay artists to deliver our projects, instead of going to our (albeit very lovely) carbon-neutral UK based server provider.
Please keep copies of your work if you want to keep it after the project ends.
Daily prompts
Do I have to follow the daily prompt?
No – the prompts are intended to help unstick you if you can’t think of something to make today. If you have your own ideas and projects, feel free to use those ideas instead.
You might find some inspiration from artist Josh Philpot, who has experience of a chronic health condition, and who has taken part every year since 2021. He recently wrote about his experience of participating in 30/30 and how 30/30 has informed his practice.
The project is intended to encourage daily making – please don’t upload work that you’ve made already. The project is for artists to make work to show other artists, not a general audience. Try Instagram for promotion instead.
Crits
What is a 30/30 crit?
We run 3 crit sessions for participants anywhere in the world during 30/30. Crits are open to any participant, anywhere in the world, but are conducted in English and on UK time – artists in Australia might find the timing difficult, but are welcome to come along.
During the crits, artists can share their work, get feedback, make new friends and contacts, and find out more about being an artist in different parts of the world.
30/30 crits are modelled on our popular Artquest Crits project, open to artists anywhere in England.
How can I participate in a 30/30 crit?
Anyone who registers for 30/30 will be invited by email to book a place on one of our crits. Places book up very quickly and we unfortunately can’t provide a place for all participants.
Artists in England can book a place on our popular Artquest Crits, outside of 30/30.
Do I have to take part?
Participation in 30/30 crits is voluntary. You do not have to take part. But if you do take part, we ask that everyone speaks, shares, shows and gets involved.
Meeting other participants
How do I see the works people have uploaded?
Visit the 30/30 project home page and pick a day.
Scroll through the entries and, if you find a work you like, click the artist’s name to see all of their entries and their Artquest Exchange public profile.
Can I contact the artists who have made the work?
Yes! We encourage participants to contact each other and build new connections.
Even if you’re not taking part in 30/30, any member of our free Artquest Exchange network can message any participant securely through our website. Artquest Exchange is only open to individual professional visual artists, anywhere in the world.
Acceptable content
Is there anything I can’t upload?
30/30 is an open platform for any internet user. As a rule of thumb, don’t upload anything you wouldn’t write on a postcard, say to your gran, or write on a poster next to your name.
Specifically, you should not submit any content in these categories:
- Non-consensual imagery – photos or videos of anyone in the nude, or sexually suggestive in nature, that have been taken or distributed without their knowledge or consent.
- Sexually explicit material – any material that is explicitly sexual, pornographic, prurient, or lascivious in nature.
- Imagery of victims – lurid or gratuitous material depicting victims of violence, torture, mutilation, or dismemberment.
- Hateful imagery – imagery or symbols used in a manner that dehumanises, mocks, or contributes to an atmosphere of harassment, intimidation, as well as indirect threats against an individual or community on the basis of their actual or perceived ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, disability, or religious beliefs.
- Mocking content – targeted content that overtly makes fun of, jeers at, or treats other users with contempt in a manner that could reasonably be interpreted as causing harm.
- Content glorifying harm – content that is the celebration or praise of acts of harm or violence committed against or befalling a person or group of people.
- Self-harm – content or imagery that promotes, encourages, provides instructions for, or glorifies suicidal or self-injurious behaviours, including unhealthy under-eating or over-eating, and unhealthy amounts of exercise.
You should only submit work that you have created yourself, or that you have the right to share. Don’t post anything you’ve copied or collected from the internet or that you don’t have the right to share.
Anything submitted that is disrespectful, aggressive, or otherwise abusive will be removed, as will any artwork which targets people based of an inherent / protected characteristic such as race, ethnicity, national origin, disability, religious affiliation, sexual orientation, sex, gender identity, or serious disease.
In serious enough cases, we will report such images and the participant who made them to the police.
For more information see our Code of Conduct for Artquest Exchange members. We reserve the right to remove any posts that do not follow these guidelines, to ban participants who upload these works with no right to appeal, and act conservatively to protect the majority of our participants and keep 30/30 safe and friendly for everyone.
Is there a particular kind of work I should be submitting?
Not really! You can submit work in any medium, either in response to the daily prompt or something that you are testing out yourself as part of your own practice.
I’ve found a submission that’s hateful or inappropriate. How do I report it?
Each work submitted has a Report button. If you see something inappropriate that you want us to look at and consider removing, click the link next to the work to send us an email detailing the work, where it is, and what you feel is wrong.
We take a look at submissions every day but can’t guarantee we can catch everything ourselves. We can’t take action against works we don’t know about or can’t find – your reporting helps keep the site safe for everyone.
Since the project began in 2015 with artist collective 12ø, no artworks have been reported and no complaints about the work received. We’re proud of the participants who take the project in the spirit it is intended, and keep a safe space for everyone.
About the project and taking part
What is 30/30?
30/30 is a fun challenge where artists create a new artwork every day for 30 days. Upload your work to the Artquest website each day by 23:30 (11.30pm, UK time) or you are out of the project. With the time restriction of one day, you may find the choices you make, the corners you cut, and the ideas that you couldn’t quite realise are as important as the work you produce.
Each year, hundreds of artists participate in 30/30 from around the world. In 2023 over 700 artists from around the world began on 1 April, and over 200 completed the challenge. In 2024 almost 800 artists took part, with two-thirds making it all the way.
Do I need to have an Artquest Exchange profile to take part in 30/30?
30/30 is only open to artists with a free Artquest Exchange profile.
This makes it easier and more secure for artists to contact each other through our network, and for our small, part-time team to keep things safe. It also keeps all your data and artwork on UK servers, and makes it easy for us to securely delete all the work at the end of the challenge.
I never got an email confirming my registration. What should I do?
See the frequently asked question about email above.
How do I change my details?
To change details in your public Artquest Exchange account, log in and edit your public information.
Visit your account page to change your email address, password or privacy and notification settings.
How was 30/30 created?
30/30, which was called 30works30days until the 2025 edition, was devised by 12ø collective and run by them from 2015–2022.
At the start of the first COVID-19 pandemic lockdown in March 2020, Artquest contacted 12ø to offer support, providing money to make registration free and paying artists to make daily selections of work to promote on our social media. We also paid the artists running 12ø for their time administering their project.
This arrangement continued until 2022, when 12ø decided to amicably wind up their collective and passed the project to Artquest.
12ø collective members were artists Eva Duerden, Kelly Lloyd and Lou Macnamara, with former members including Jacob Watmore, Jeff Ko and Chloe Miller.
What do I get for taking part?
30/30 is a fun challenge for artists to make a new work of art every day during April. It is aimed at artists who are looking to challenge themselves, those who might be stuck in a creative rut, or people who are looking for a bit of informal structure to kickstart their practice. It is aimed at:
- professional artists who want to experiment, loosen up, and explore different ways to sustain their practice
- artists who have had some time out of practice who want to reset their working time through daily focussed making
- committed amateurs who want to challenge themselves
- artists who want to overcome a creative block and learn to play again
Alongside the creative benefits of taking part:
- We’ll host some online peer mentoring sessions open only to artists who register for 30/30.
- We will hold an online pixel party for all participants on Gather at the end of the project, so you can meet other online.
- Every day 5 artworks will be randomly chosen to be shared on the Artquest Instagram account.
