A Commissioner will:

  • Approach you with an opportunity and context to make new work
  • Know of you and your practice
  • Check your availability to do the project
  • Discuss a realistic timeline
  • Commit to discussing an idea with you
  • Discuss deliverability with you – is this achievable?
  • Ask you to respond to this initial idea in writing declaring your ‘expression of interest’

As an Artist you should:

  • Ask yourself if this opportunity is interesting: Does it spark your imagination? Is it in keeping with your practice? Will it develop it?
  • Consider – do you have time, what is the budget?
  • Do your own research of the site and context
  • Discuss how specific the brief is and if there is room for development
  • Ask all questions to the commissioner, no matter how small
  • Arrange an in-person meeting with Commissioner. Face-to-face meetings are important in establishing working relationships.
  • Put forward different ideas that create a space where you can work together
  • Find out who the stakeholders are in the commission. Understand their goals and agendas.
  • Be clear about the commissioners’ expectations.
