An expression of interest is the first stage in the commissioning process.
A Commissioner will:
- Approach you with an opportunity and context to make new work
- Know of you and your practice
- Check your availability to do the project
- Discuss a realistic timeline
- Commit to discussing an idea with you
- Discuss deliverability with you – is this achievable?
- Ask you to respond to this initial idea in writing declaring your ‘expression of interest’
As an Artist you should:
- Ask yourself if this opportunity is interesting: Does it spark your imagination? Is it in keeping with your practice? Will it develop it?
- Consider – do you have time, what is the budget?
- Do your own research of the site and context
- Discuss how specific the brief is and if there is room for development
- Ask all questions to the commissioner, no matter how small
- Arrange an in-person meeting with Commissioner. Face-to-face meetings are important in establishing working relationships.
- Put forward different ideas that create a space where you can work together
- Find out who the stakeholders are in the commission. Understand their goals and agendas.
- Be clear about the commissioners’ expectations.
